command performances
Monarch-requested shows
A command performance is originally a theatrical or musical show given at a monarch's request—the sovereign literally commands it.
By extension, any obligatory appearance before important people becomes a command performance: Thanksgiving dinner at the in-laws' is always a command performance.
The phrase carries a note of reluctant duty dressed up as honor.
