freight barge
River cargo hauler
A freight barge is a flat-bottomed boat designed to transport cargo on rivers, canals, and coastal waters.
Unlike self-propelled vessels, barges are typically pushed or towed by tugboats.
They carry bulk goods—grain, coal, petroleum, construction materials—more cheaply than trucks or rail for certain routes: A string of freight barges moved slowly up the Mississippi.
