push boat
Barge-moving vessel
A push boat is a powerful vessel designed to move barges by pushing them from behind rather than towing.
Common on rivers and inland waterways, push boats position themselves at the stern of barge groups lashed together, providing propulsion and steering: The push boat guided twelve grain barges down the Mississippi.
Also called a towboat, despite not towing.
