fossick
Hunt for scraps
Fossick is Australian and New Zealand English for searching or rummaging, especially for gold or gemstones in abandoned mines or surface deposits.
The term extends to any casual searching through discarded material: She fossicked through the pile of old clothes at the market.
A fossicker is someone who does this, typically an amateur prospector rather than a commercial miner.
