fossae
Hollows in bone
Fossae is the plural of fossa, an anatomical term for a shallow depression or hollow in a bone or other body structure.
The skull contains several: the cranial fossae house portions of the brain, the temporal fossa accommodates chewing muscles.
In planetary geology, fossae are long, narrow troughs on a surface: The Martian surface is marked by deep fossae.
