former Yugoslavia
Tito's dissolved federation
Former Yugoslavia refers to the federation of six Balkan republics—Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia—that existed as a unified state from 1945 until its violent dissolution in the 1990s.
The phrase distinguishes the defunct country from its successor states: My grandfather grew up in former Yugoslavia.
It appears frequently in discussions of the Yugoslav Wars and Balkan history.
