food stamp

Government nutrition coupon

A food stamp is a government-issued coupon or voucher that low-income households can exchange for food at grocery stores.

The term persists in American speech even though physical stamps were replaced by electronic benefit cards in the 1990s: She's on food stamps.

The official U.S. program is now called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), but food stamps remains the common term.
