EBT card

Government food assistance

An EBT card is an Electronic Benefits Transfer card—a government-issued debit card used to distribute food stamps and other public assistance.

Recipients use it at grocery stores and ATMs to access their benefits: She swiped her EBT card at the checkout.

The card replaced paper food stamps in the 1990s.
