flyblowing

Insect egg depositing

Flyblowing is the process by which flies deposit eggs or larvae on meat, wounds, or other organic matter, leading to infestation with maggots.

The term applies both to the fly's action and to the resulting contaminated state.

Meat that has been flyblown is spoiled and unfit for consumption.

In sheep farming, flyblowing (also called flystrike) is a serious welfare concern when blowflies lay eggs in soiled wool, and the hatching maggots feed on the animal's flesh.
