crutching

Cleaning sheep's rear

Crutching is the shearing of wool from around a sheep's hindquarters and between the rear legs.

This targeted trim keeps the area clean and prevents fecal matter from accumulating in the fleece—a condition called flystrike that attracts blowflies.

Australian and New Zealand sheep farmers crutch flocks regularly between full shearings: The lambs need crutching before summer.
