floating floor
Rests without fasteners
A floating floor is a floor installation that isn't fastened directly to the subfloor beneath it.
Instead, the flooring pieces lock together and rest on an underlayment, held in place by their own weight and the walls around them.
Laminate, vinyl plank, and some engineered hardwoods are commonly installed this way: We went with a floating floor because it's easier to install over concrete.
