A flayer is one who flays—who strips skin from a body or bark from a tree.
The word appears most often in fantasy contexts, where flayers are creatures or torturers who remove skin: The mind flayer is among the most feared monsters in the game.
Outside fantasy, flayer occasionally describes harsh critics who figuratively skin their targets alive.
