flashpoints

Volatile situation triggers

Flashpoints are locations or moments where conflict is likely to erupt.

The term comes from chemistry—the temperature at which a substance ignites—but now primarily describes geopolitical hotspots or volatile situations: Taiwan remains a flashpoint in US-China relations.

Any issue prone to sudden escalation can be called a flashpoint: Immigration has become a flashpoint in the campaign.
