fire rating
Combustion endurance measure
A fire rating measures how long a building material, door, wall, or other component can withstand fire before failing.
Ratings are expressed in time increments—typically 20 minutes to 4 hours: a 2-hour fire rating, fire-rated drywall.
Building codes specify minimum fire ratings for walls, doors, and structural elements based on occupancy type and proximity to property lines.
- building codesLaws governing structure safety
- intumescentSwells from heat exposure
- flame retardantSubstance inhibiting ignition
- non-combustibleUnable to catch fire
- burn throughConsume rapidly, completely
