file search
Finding stored data
A file search is the process of looking through a computer's storage to find specific files, typically by name, type, date, or contents.
Operating systems and applications provide file search functions to locate documents without manually browsing folders: I did a file search for all the PDFs from last month.
The term also applies to physical searches through paper files in offices or archives.
