A fertilizer bomb is an improvised explosive device using ammonium nitrate fertilizer as its main component.
The chemical, normally used to enrich soil with nitrogen, becomes a powerful oxidizer when mixed with fuel oil or other accelerants.
Fertilizer bombs have been used in domestic terrorism, most notoriously the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing: The fertilizer bomb destroyed the federal building.
