feed lots
Livestock fattening enclosures
Feed lots are large enclosed areas where livestock—especially cattle—are confined and fattened for slaughter.
Animals in feed lots eat grain-based diets rather than grazing on pasture, allowing rapid weight gain before processing.
The term often appears in discussions of industrial agriculture and meat production: Most beef cattle spend their final months in feed lots.
Also spelled as one word: feedlots.
