Diagnostic trouble number
A fault code is a standardized identifier—usually alphanumeric—that diagnostic systems generate when they detect a malfunction.
Most familiar from automotive repair, where a mechanic reads fault codes from a vehicle's onboard computer: The check engine light came on, so I had it scanned—the fault code pointed to the oxygen sensor.
Fault codes appear in any system with self-monitoring capability, from appliances to industrial equipment.
