farm system
Minor league network
A farm system is a network of minor league teams affiliated with a major league franchise, used to develop players for the top level.
The term comes from baseball, where young talent is "grown" through progressively higher leagues before reaching the majors: He spent five years in the farm system before getting called up.
The concept has spread to other sports.
