false awakening
Waking that isn't
A false awakening is the vivid experience of waking up while still asleep—a dream of getting out of bed, starting your day, or checking the time that feels entirely real until actual waking reveals it was illusory.
False awakenings can occur in sequence, creating disorienting layers: I thought I'd finally woken up, but it was another false awakening.
