fall of Icarus

Wax wings failed

The fall of Icarus refers to the Greek myth in which Icarus, flying on wings made of feathers and wax, ignored his father Daedalus's warning and flew too close to the sun.

The wax melted and he plunged into the sea.

The phrase evokes hubris, overreaching ambition, and the catastrophic consequences of ignoring wise counsel: His rapid rise and fall of Icarus trajectory surprised no one who knew him.
