fake giveaway

A fake giveaway is a scam disguised as a promotional contest or prize distribution.

Common on social media, these schemes promise free items, gift cards, or cash in exchange for personal information, account follows, or small "processing fees" that multiply into larger losses.

The setup exploits the appeal of getting something for nothing: That crypto giveaway is fake—Elon Musk isn't giving away Bitcoin.

Legitimate giveaways exist, but fake ones typically pressure quick action, require excessive personal details, or come from unverified accounts impersonating brands or celebrities.
