external flash
Detachable lighting unit
An external flash is a detachable flash unit that mounts on a camera, as opposed to the built-in flash.
External flashes offer more power, better control over light direction, and features like bounce and swivel heads: I use an external flash for indoor portraits.
They connect via hot shoe or sync cable and can be positioned off-camera for more creative lighting.
