empty net
Vacated hockey goal
Empty net refers to a goal in hockey scored when the opposing team has pulled their goaltender, leaving the net undefended.
Teams pull their goalie in desperate situations, usually when trailing late in a game, to add an extra skater.
An empty-net goal is relatively easy to score but often seals a victory: She fired it into the empty net to make it 4-2.
