electric pianos
Plugged-in keyboard instruments
Electric pianos are keyboard instruments that produce sound through electromechanical or electronic means rather than acoustic strings and hammers.
The term usually refers to instruments like the Fender Rhodes or Wurlitzer, which use metal tines or reeds amplified by pickups, giving a distinctive bell-like tone heard in jazz, soul, and rock: The electric piano riff on that track is iconic.
Sometimes the term extends to fully electronic keyboards that simulate piano sounds.
