eelworm

Soil-dwelling plant pest

Eelworm is any of various small, slender nematode worms that resemble tiny eels.

Many species are plant parasites, attacking roots, stems, or bulbs and causing significant agricultural damage: The potato crop was devastated by eelworm.

The term is more common in British English; American usage tends toward the more technical *nematode*.
