ecto
Prefix meaning outer
Ecto is a prefix meaning outside or external, the opposite of endo (within).
It appears in scientific terms: an ectomorph has a lean body type, ectoplasm is the outer layer of cytoplasm (or the ghostly substance supposedly emanating from mediums), and an ectopic pregnancy occurs outside the uterus.
In casual use, ecto sometimes stands alone as shorthand for anything ghostly or supernatural, from the film *Ghostbusters*.
