down-and-outs
Those without anything
Down-and-outs are people who have fallen to the bottom of society—homeless, destitute, and without prospects.
The term comes from the adjective down-and-out, describing someone knocked down and counted out in boxing, extended to mean defeated by life: The shelter provides meals for down-and-outs.
The word carries a tone of permanent rather than temporary misfortune.
