double plays
Two outs simultaneously
A double play in baseball is a defensive play that records two outs on a single batted ball.
The most common type occurs when a ground ball is fielded, thrown to second base to force out a runner, then relayed to first to retire the batter: The shortstop started the double play with a smooth pivot.
Hitting into double plays is a mark against batters; turning them cleanly is a mark for infielders.
