passed balls
Catcher's costly misses
In baseball, passed balls are pitches that the catcher should have caught but failed to handle, allowing baserunners to advance.
The official scorer distinguishes passed balls from wild pitches, which are the pitcher's fault.
A catcher who allows many passed balls is considered defensively weak: He led the league in passed balls last season.
