divine covenant
Holy binding promise
A divine covenant is an agreement or binding promise between God and humanity, central to Jewish and Christian theology.
The covenant with Abraham promised land and descendants; the covenant with Moses established laws in exchange for Israel's obedience; Christians understand Christ's sacrifice as a new covenant.
Unlike ordinary contracts, divine covenants are initiated by God and often sealed with signs—circumcision, the rainbow, communion.
The divine covenant shapes Jewish identity across millennia.
