dimout
Reduced lighting period
A dimout is a partial reduction of lighting, less severe than a blackout.
During wartime, cities ordered dimouts to make targets harder to spot from the air while still allowing limited visibility for residents: The coastal dimout made navigation difficult.
The term extends to any deliberate reduction of illumination or, figuratively, a partial suppression of information.
