designer drug

Chemically tweaked narcotic

A designer drug is a synthetic substance created to mimic the effects of illegal drugs while evading drug laws—the chemical structure is tweaked just enough to fall outside existing prohibitions.

The term emerged in the 1980s with synthetic heroin variants and now covers countless compounds: synthetic cannabinoids, bath salts, and novel psychoactive substances.

Designer drugs are often more dangerous than the drugs they imitate because their effects are unpredictable and untested: Three students were hospitalized after taking a designer drug at the party.
