deep-lying

Situated well beneath

Deep-lying describes something positioned far below a surface or situated in a location that is not immediately accessible or visible.

The term appears most often in sports, particularly soccer, where a deep-lying midfielder or playmaker operates closer to their own goal rather than pushing forward, allowing them to dictate play from behind.

The manager deployed him as a deep-lying playmaker to control the tempo.

It can also describe geological features or abstract qualities that exist at a fundamental level: deep-lying tensions in the relationship.
