decontextualise

Remove from original setting

To decontextualise is to remove something from its original context, often distorting its meaning in the process.

A quote decontextualised from a longer speech may seem to say something the speaker never intended.

The word appears frequently in media criticism and academic discourse: The clip was decontextualised to make her look callous.
