decidualization
Endometrial cell conversion
Decidualization is the transformation of uterine lining cells in preparation for pregnancy.
During the menstrual cycle, the endometrium thickens and its cells change structure to support potential embryo implantation.
If pregnancy doesn't occur, this specialized tissue is shed during menstruation.
The term comes from decidua, the name for the modified uterine lining during pregnancy, which itself derives from the Latin for "falling off."
