deadlocked jury
Split deciding group
A deadlocked jury is one that cannot reach the required agreement—usually unanimity—to deliver a verdict.
When jurors remain hopelessly split after extended deliberation, the judge may declare a mistrial: The deadlocked jury forced prosecutors to decide whether to retry the case.
Also called a hung jury.
