cyanate

OCN anion compound

Cyanate is a chemical compound containing the cyanate ion—a negatively charged group with carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms arranged in a chain.

Cyanates form salts with metals and appear in industrial chemistry: potassium cyanate, sodium cyanate.

The related adjective cyanic describes compounds containing cyanogen.

Not to be confused with cyanide, which is far more toxic.
