cultural trauma
Shared historical injury
Cultural trauma occurs when a group experiences an event so devastating that it permanently marks their collective memory and identity.
The trauma becomes embedded in how the group understands itself—slavery for African Americans, the Holocaust for Jews, colonization for Indigenous peoples.
Unlike individual trauma, cultural trauma is transmitted across generations through stories, rituals, and inherited grief: The famine remains a cultural trauma for the Irish.
The concept helps explain why historical wounds continue to shape present-day politics and group psychology.
