cross the Rubicon

Pass no-return threshold

To cross the Rubicon is to take an irreversible step, committing oneself to a course of action from which there is no turning back.

The phrase comes from Julius Caesar's fateful decision in 49 BCE to lead his army across the Rubicon River into Italy, an act of war against Rome.

Today it applies to any decisive moment where hesitation ends and commitment begins: Once we signed the contract, we had crossed the Rubicon.
