cross-ties
Rail bed supports
Cross-ties are the wooden or concrete beams laid perpendicular to railroad tracks, supporting the rails and maintaining their spacing.
In American usage, they're called ties or railroad ties; British English uses sleepers.
The term also applies to diagonal braces used in construction to stabilize framing: The carpenter added cross-ties between the floor joists.
