cross-examining

Grilling under oath

Cross-examining is questioning someone who has already been questioned by the opposing side, typically in a legal proceeding.

The goal is to test, challenge, or undermine testimony through pointed questions: The defense attorney spent hours cross-examining the witness.

Outside courtrooms, it describes any aggressive or skeptical interrogation: My mother cross-examined me about where I'd been all night.
