sworn declaration
Legally binding promise
A sworn declaration is a formal written statement affirmed to be true, carrying legal penalties for lying.
Unlike an affidavit, which requires a notary's signature, a sworn declaration is signed under penalty of perjury without notarization: The immigration application included a sworn declaration of financial support.
The terms are often used interchangeably in casual speech, though courts distinguish them.
