cowtowns

Old West burgs

Cowtowns are small towns in cattle-raising regions, especially those that served as destinations for cattle drives in the American West: Dodge City and Abilene were famous cowtowns.

The term often carries a dismissive connotation, suggesting a place that is rural, unsophisticated, or culturally limited: I couldn't wait to escape that cowtown.
