cow pat

Bovine field deposit

A cow pat is a flat, roughly circular deposit of cow dung found in pastures and fields.

Also called a cow pie or cow flop, these form when cattle defecate on grass, creating distinctive disc-shaped mounds that dry and harden over time.

Dried cow pats have historically been collected as fuel in some cultures, and children sometimes play games involving them.

Watch your step—this field is full of cow pats.
