coverlets

Decorative bed layers

Coverlets are bedspreads—decorative coverings laid over beds, typically lighter than quilts or comforters.

The word has an old-fashioned quality; modern usage tends toward *bedspread* or *duvet cover*.

She smoothed the embroidered coverlet before the guests arrived.
