course descriptions

What classes cover

Course descriptions are brief summaries of what an academic class covers—its topics, objectives, and sometimes prerequisites.

They appear in college catalogs and registration systems, helping students decide what to take: The course description promised hands-on lab work, but the class was mostly lectures.

Often written in formal, slightly inflated language that obscures whether the course will actually be interesting.
