activity coefficient
Concentration-behavior adjustment factor
A factor in chemistry that measures how much a substance in solution deviates from ideal behavior.
In ideal solutions, molecules interact uniformly, but real solutions have varying interactions between different species.
The activity coefficient corrects for these non-ideal effects: The activity coefficient approaches 1 in very dilute solutions.
Used in thermodynamics and electrochemistry to calculate accurate equilibrium constants and reaction rates.
