counterappeal
Opposing legal challenge
A counterappeal is an appeal made in response to another appeal, typically in legal contexts where one party appeals a decision and the opposing party files their own appeal challenging different aspects of the same ruling.
More broadly, it can mean any persuasive effort designed to offset or neutralize another's attempt at persuasion: The campaign launched a counterappeal to voters after their opponent's emotional ads.
