coroner's court
Mortality inquiry venue
A coroner's court is a judicial proceeding that investigates deaths occurring under unusual, violent, or unexplained circumstances.
The coroner—a public official, often a physician or lawyer—determines the cause and manner of death.
Unlike criminal trials, coroner's courts don't assign guilt; they establish facts: The coroner's court ruled the death accidental.
In some jurisdictions, a jury assists.
